OfflineGreetings and I hope you are all doing well.
We have a “Planet Party” coming up in one week at Cheyenne Mountain State Park on Saturday, Feb 21st from 6-8 PM. We’ll be setting up our telescopes and sharing views of the night sky at far Eastern end of the limekiln trailhead parking lot.
We should have a Moon around 1st Quarter, Saturn and Jupiter to view along with rest of the great Winter celestial sights. Weather permitting it should be a good night.
We are also planning to have a hot chocolate station set up on the North end as well with free hot chocolate for all that attend!
The limekiln trailhead parking lot is accessed by entering the park, traveling by the Visitor Center and taking the first left that you come to after the entrance portal. The parking lot has enough spaces for 300+ cars, has no lights and a 24 hour restroom. It’s proximity to downtown and Fort Carson still makes it a little light polluted but the lack of trees and lights makes it one of the best local gathering places in town that I’ve found. Plus the park staff is overwhelming supportive which we really appreciate.
As to weather, we’ll keep an eye out and will make a final go/no-go call no later than 24 hours prior. I’ll update the Facebook event and the web page calendar if there is a weather cancellation.
I hope to see you there!
